Sacramento has exactly one Thai restaurant in the Michelin Guide. Kin Thai Street Eatery picked up that listing in May 2025 and still holds it alone. Useful to know, and a poor place to stop looking, because the Thai food in Sacramento worth a drive is scattered across Midtown, Freeport Boulevard, Elk Grove, and a strip mall out on Watt Avenue.

Key Takeaways
- One Michelin listing: Kin Thai Street Eatery is the only Thai restaurant in the Sacramento area recognized by the Michelin Guide, added May 14, 2025. It holds a listing, not a star.
- What dinner costs: seven items for two at Kin Thai came to $101.59 with tax in August 2026, including a pint of Singha and dessert.
- Order the fried chicken biryani: khao mok gai tod at Kin Thai, $25, is the dish worth building a visit around.
- Four flavor families: Thai menus organize around tom (boiled), yam (salads), tam (pounded), and gaeng (curry). Reading those words makes any menu here navigable.
- Spread across the region: Midtown, Downtown, Southside Park, Freeport Boulevard, North Highlands, and Elk Grove all hold a kitchen worth the drive.
- For heat: Pattaya Cafe on Watt Avenue will take any dish as hot as you are willing to ask for.
Thai Food Basics
Traditional Thai cuisine is represented by four general categories:
Tom Dishes
Tom is a Thai word which essentially means “boiling a broth.” Anything with Tom in the name means the dish will feature boiled ingredients. Popular soups and Tom dishes include Tom yum goong, Tom kha, Tom kloang, and Tom som.
Yam Dishes
Yam indicates you are about to order a Thai Salad. There are four groups of salads, yam, tam, lap and phla. Yams use minced meat, seafood or noodles along with a sour flavor, such as lime juice.
Tam
Tam means pounded foods, either with a mortar and pestle or with a mallet on a cutting board or other hard surface.
Gaeng
Gaeng is curry, also spelled kaeng. The two most common curries are red curry (gaeng ped) and green curry (gaeng kiow wahn). Most curries are made with coconut milk.
Chinese influenced Thai include deep-fried, stir-fried, and steamed dishes.

The seven most popular Thai dishes in the entire world are:
Tom Yam Goong
Massaman Curry
Pad Thai
Som Tam
Green Curry
Thai Fried Rice
Nam Tok Mu

Kin Thai Street Eatery
Midtown Sacramento
Kin Thai occupies a converted warehouse on 20th Street, low-lit and washed in blue neon, heavy on plants. Sisters Napis Lindley and Napak Kongsitthanakor run it. The Michelin Guide added the restaurant in May 2025 and singled out the Thai tea slushy in its write-up, which suggests the inspectors sat down and ordered rather than skimming a menu.
We ordered seven things on an August evening and paid $101.59. Curry puffs arrived three to a red lacquer tray with a cucumber relish sharp enough to cut the pastry. The massaman came in its own small metal pot alongside jasmine rice on a banana leaf, sweet and thick with fried shallots. Khao mok gai tod is the one to build a visit around: fried chicken over turmeric-stained rice, large enough for two people to share and considerably better than that description makes it sound. Sago pudding finished it, green pearls suspended in coconut milk under a scoop of ice cream.

The Thai beer list rewards reading. The wine list runs a short bench of California familiars and is clearly not where the attention went.

What we ordered, and what it cost

|---|---|
| Thai iced tea | $6.50 |
| Singha draft, pint | $9.00 |
| Chicken curry puffs | $13.50 |
| Satay chicken | $7.50 |
| Massaman curry | $21.50 |
| Khao mok gai tod | $25.00 |
| Sago pudding | $10.00 |
| Subtotal | $93.00 |
| Tax | $8.59 |
| Total | $101.59 |

Is There a Michelin-Starred Thai Restaurant in Sacramento?
No, and the distinction is worth getting right because plenty of coverage blurs it. Kin Thai holds a Michelin Guide listing. That is recognition, not a star.
The guide works in tiers. Stars go to a small number of kitchens. Below that sits the Bib Gourmand, awarded for good cooking at a moderate price. Below that is plain inclusion, which still means an inspector visited and thought the place belonged in the book. Most restaurants in the guide, in any city, sit in that third group. Kin Thai is one of them.
Sacramento’s Bib Gourmands are Canon in East Sacramento, Frank Fat’s downtown, Nixtaco in Roseville, and Yue Huang in Natomas. None of them are Thai. Kin Thai arrived in the guide on May 14, 2025, on the same day as Majka and Pho Momma, joining fourteen Sacramento restaurants already listed.
No Thai restaurant in Sacramento holds a Michelin star. One holds a listing, which is worth taking seriously on its own terms and worth not inflating into something larger.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Sacramento Thai restaurant is in the Michelin Guide?
Kin Thai Street Eatery, at 1050 20th Street in Midtown. It was added on May 14, 2025 and is the only Thai restaurant in the Sacramento area in the guide. It holds a listing rather than a star or a Bib Gourmand.
What does dinner for two cost at Kin Thai?
Seven items came to $101.59 with tax in August 2026, covering two appetizers, two mains, a dessert, a Thai iced tea, and a pint of Singha. Mains run $21.50 to $25. A lighter dinner for two lands closer to $60.
What is khao mok gai tod?
Thai fried chicken served over turmeric-stained rice, the Thai relative of biryani, usually with a dipping sauce and a cucumber relish alongside. At Kin Thai it arrives in a wide bowl and comfortably feeds two.
What does “Thai spicy” mean when a server asks?
It means the kitchen seasons the dish the way it would at home rather than the way it usually does for an American dining room. Ask for it if you want the real range of a dish. Pattaya Cafe on Watt Avenue is the one on this list most willing to take it as far as you ask.
How do you read a Thai menu?
Four words carry most of it. Tom means boiled, so anything with tom in the name is a soup. Yam means a salad, usually sour with lime. Tam means pounded, as in som tam. Gaeng means curry, with gaeng ped for red and gaeng kiow wahn for green. Learn those and most menus in this city open up.
Where is the best Thai food in Midtown Sacramento?
Kin Thai Street Eatery on 20th Street for the fullest menu, The Coconut on T for green curry and attentive service, and Thai Canteen on 16th Street for Bangkok-style rice plates and som tum.
Which Thai restaurant near downtown Sacramento is worth a weeknight?
Bangkok @ 12 Thai on 12th Street, which has the broadest vegetarian selection on this list and a dining room built for a table of four rather than a date.
Is there good Thai food outside the city center?
Yes. Rao Thai Eatery in Elk Grove serves boat noodles with a three-spice tray so you can set the heat yourself. Pattaya Cafe sits in a North Highlands strip mall and cooks better than the room suggests. JP Thai Kitchen on Freeport Boulevard is the same story.
