Why Online Dating is Not Just for Desperate People

Finding love is rare and a journey that is often filled with heartbreak and difficulty, and yet a worthy undertaking all the same. Now with the internet as a part of all our lives, finding romance online has become a huge component of our society, with hundreds of millions of people using everything from Instagram to Facebook to Twitter to Snapchat to Tinder and everything in between to find their potential partner. And yet, trying to find the right one online still has a stigma attached to it, with many people looking down on it as a desperate, embarrassing, pathetic attempt to find something that should be found in our daily lives, almost subverting and undermining “real” romance. And while yes, staying in front of a computer or on the phone all day certainly isn’t the best or healthiest way to go about anything, online dating is as viable an option as anything else, and here are a few reasons why.

Why online dating is not just for desperate people

Convenience

Online dating is simply ridiculously convenient, letting you meet new people from the comfort of your couch or anywhere else as long as you have an internet connection. Using a casual dating app, you are given the flexibility and convenience to get to know new people whenever and wherever you choose. The signup process is also usually very uncomplicated, where you need to enter your email, upload a few photos of yourself, and perhaps provide proof that you are above 18 years of age, and you are good to go.

You’re more Relaxed

Another benefit of online dating is that you are automatically much more relaxed. You don’t even need to leave your home to meet someone, and you can respond to your matches’ messages whenever you feel like it, with zero pressure. Admittedly, that kind of relaxation can also have negative consequences, making something that is or should be taken seriously, like relationships, almost too casual, with many people ending up getting seriously hurt. But as long as you stay responsible and mature, try to consider the other person’s feelings, and not just think about yourself, you should be fine.

Variety

With so many people so quickly available, a tap of an icon away comes a vast variety of potential partners, with different personalities, hobbies, ethnicities, and so on, allowing you to meet people you may have never met otherwise, maybe even from across the globe, who you were not likely to see in your daily life. Online dating may be an especially viable option if you live in a smaller town or area, don’t or never did travel much, and had no luck yet in the romance department. Who knows, you may just find the love of your life like this. Give it a shot.

Online dating may not be the most glamorous or cinematic way of discovering romance, but it is a lot better than having to stay alone for years and years just because you were too stubborn to give the online method a shot. If you find it, you will be a lot luckier than many, many other people who prefer to just sit and wait instead of actively looking.
