Lawn Care Tips for the Winter

When winter rolls around you want to make sure that you’re not just taking the time to take care of your home but you also want to make sure that you’re taking care of your outdoors as well.

This means that you need to ensure that your lawn is on point as well. Here are some tips for making sure your lawn is looking as awesome as possible throughout the winter.

Remove Debris

It’s important that you move all debris that is on your lawn throughout the winter. There will be falling leaves and you need to make sure that your grass does not get suffocated along the way as you don’t want any bare patches to start up all over it.

Not only is this unsightly and unseemly but it can cause problems for you. It will be a harboring ground for insects and other sorts of pests. Before winter gets into full gear you should make sure that you remove all the debris.

If winter has started and this debris is present you can still try to salvage things by removing them as much as possible.

Squash Pre-Emergent Weeds

A good step to take is to make sure you get rid of all the pre-emergent weeds ahead of the spring. These types of weeds are extremely pesky and just pop up and make your beautiful spring garden look less than magazine-ready during the warmer months of the year.

You want to make sure that you get rid of them during the winter although this does not mean you won’t have to deal with some of them during the spring and summer. Before the temperature gets too cold, you can use some herbicide on certain spots where these pesky weeds love to spring up their heads.

Winter Watering

One misconception out there is that you should not be pouring water onto your lawn when it’s wintertime. Nothing could be further from the truth.

If you’re going through a dry winter then you will need to be moisturizing that lawn as much as you possibly can. Deep watering is something that you should aim for instead of shallow watering.

Your sprinkler system will still be very much needed so don’t put it into retirement just yet. You should also find sprinkler system leaks and fix them.

Use Winter Fertilizer

Don’t be afraid to use those fertilizers during the wintertime. If you have a high nitrogen fertilizer you can pour it on the lawn.

The time release of the nutrients is essential for feeding your grass and keeping it fluffed, primed, and ready for the warmer months. It’ll also help to chase away any pests that want to become squatters in your winter lawn.

Just because Frosty the Snowman is taking shape outside, it doesn’t mean that you should let all the frost and ice take over your lawn without trying to do something to salvage it. You will have a beautiful and flourishing lawn that’s full of life when the warmer months roll around.
