Plinko is arguably one of those games that you would recognize, even if you haven’t heard the name before. It is a pegboard game where a chip is dropped from a slot on the top of the board, descends through a series of pegs that give a 50-50 chance of pushing the chip left or right, before finally settling in a slot at the bottom of the board. The final resting place usually determines a prize of some sort.
The game of Plinko was introduced to the world on the TV game show The Price Is Right in 1983. Indeed, the host of the popular show, Bob Barker, claims the naming of the game came from the distinctive “plink-plink-plink” sounds the chips make as they bounce around the game board. That said, The Price Is Right team probably didn’t conceive of the idea in a vacuum, as they clearly took inspiration from Galton boards or bean machines, which are used in probability demos. There’s also arguably some influence from the Japanese game Pachinko, which has similar mechanics, although it is not entirely the same.
Plinko has conquered online casinos
While The Price Is Right – America’s longest-running television game show – is still going strong, Plinko has taken on a life of its own away from the bright lights of the studio. It is seen as the ultimate game of chance – perhaps even more so than games like roulette. It pops up a lot now in online casinos and social online casinos. You can find Plinko games at McLuck online, for example. Physical variants of the game do appear at arcades and funfairs too.
Yet, it is online where there has been a popularity explosion, especially in recent years. One theory for its rise in popularity has been its association with a new style of casino gaming called crash games. Crash games are stripped-back casino games where the objective is to cash out before an event occurs. For instance, a crash game like Aviator plays an animation of a plane taking flight. As the plane ascends into the air, the game’s prize increases. The player’s objective is to cash out their winnings before the plane flies off, or they will lose. These games are popular because they are easy to play and test players’ nerves.

An example of Chaos Theory
Plinko isn’t strictly a crash game, but its simplicity and mechanics hold similar appeal to the trend of crash games. Yet, there are other reasons why Plinko has suddenly become so popular. A few years back, Forbes produced a piece discussing why the game fits so well with Chaos Theory, and how tiny little variations in where the chip is placed can produce a butterfly effect with vastly different outcomes.
The Forbes piece goes on to explain how Plinko can demonstrate how slight variations can impact more complex systems like weather patterns and stock markets. Of course, Plinko players aren’t thinking about that. Rather, we’d argue it’s the randomness that holds the appeal. We mentioned earlier that it is a game of chance, and it feels like that in the purest sense. With a lot of casino games, the player often feels they can influence the outcome, even those that have truly unpredictable results, like roulette. With Plinko, it’s up to the fates where it lands.
