The amount of money some people end up spending on their home energy bills is extortionate. While we all need to heat our homes and have water running throughout, it shouldn’t be at the expense of the majority of your income.

In fact, your home energy bills should only make up a small fraction of your outgoings where possible. However, in this day and age, that’s easier said than done. It’s a lot harder to save money with the cost of living that seems to have hit many parts of the world, with many wages not keeping up with the costs that come from day to day life.
With that in mind, if you’re looking to save money on your home energy bills in any way possible, here are eight easy ways to do it.
- Use a smart thermostat to save money
A smart thermostat is worth adding to your home for the purpose of saving money. While you can keep an eye on your traditional, manul thermostat at home, sometimes it’s good to have the power of smart technology to improve the usage of your heating.
With a smart thermostat, it learns your habits when it comes to putting the heating on around your home. It learns these habits and then adjusts them ever so slightly in order for your household to benefit from a more efficient temperature.
You can also control the smart thermostat from your home, which can be handy if you’ve left your home and forgot to turn off the thermostat before leaving. They are easy enough to install and simply replace your current one so that you can manage your heating in a cost-saving manner.
- Find ways to insulate your home
Insulating your home is an important part of keeping your home warm and also saving some money on your bills. The more insulated your home is, the more it keeps in the heat and that’s important if you’re looking to reduce your energy bills.
There are lots of ways to insulate your home and various insulation types that all vary in cost. It’s worth doing your research to see which insulation methods are the most appropriate for your home, as some will be easily accessible into wall cavities and under flooring for example.
You’ve also got things like draught excluders that you might want to consider placing at the bottom of your doors to keep the heat in. Not only that but it can be helpful in stopping any drafty doors from making your home feel cold.
- Seal up gaps around the property
To help you save money on your home energy bills, you want to take a closer look at your home’s exterior and interior. There will likely be gaps that you’ve not noticed in and around your home and are therefore causing the heat to leak out of your home.
This can happen to any property, despite whether or not it’s a new property or it’s decades older. Even the new ones can have poorly constructed areas where wear and tear from the elements causes problems.
Make sure to go around your property on occasion, especially when you’ve noticed a drop in the heating. There will likely be some area of the home that has become compromised, so it’s definitely something that you want to stay on top of.
Sealing up gaps around the home is not only helpful for the purpose of keeping the heat in your home, but also keeping unwanted pests out too.
- Fill up your dishwasher and washing machines
When it comes to your white goods, you want to try and fill up your dishwasher and washing machines as efficiently as possible. Of course, you don’t want to fill it up so much that you end up overloading it and causing damage.
However, there are some that don’t load up their appliances enough and therefore need to load up more washing as a result. That means you’re using more water and more energy, which equals higher energy bills.
Try to hold out on doing your washing until you need to. Avoid doing smaller loads unless necessary and if applicable, try doing your washing during the times of the day when the local area don’t do their washing. You could save money in some cases.
- Keep an eye on what appliances might be underperforming
Appliances around the home are all using different amounts of energy. It’s important that when it comes to your home appliances, you’re being mindful of how much is being used and what appliances might be using too much.
Sometimes, those appliances that are sucking up all the energy, are the ones that need replacing. With that being said you should be looking at what appliances are using up an unhealthy amount of energy and replacing those with better performing ones.
There will likely be some that underperform regardless but it’s worth trying to weed out all the ones that are taking a hit to your finances in the form of energy bills.
- Replace your windows and doors
Replacing your windows and doors are a great way to save money on your home energy bills. How? Well, your windows and doors will only last so long, which is why you want to keep an eye on when they’re due to be replaced.

Doors will usually last fifteen to twenty years and windows last a little longer depending on the type of window you buy. With that being said, do you know when yours were last replaced?
If you don’t, then there will often be clear signs that your windows or doors have given up. Letting a draught in is a typical sign, as well as any warping or the windows coming away from the frames and wall itself.
You should look at energy efficient windows and consider which ones are best for your home. Some are going to be more affordable than others so it’s good to assess your budget and find the best ones at the price you can afford to pay.
- Unplug your devices
Unplugging your devices can be a great way to save money on your home energy bills. You want to be mindful of how many devices you currently have plugged in and around your home. If you have them plugged in, chances are, there’s energy being used even when you’re not using the device.
Try to find ways of saving money by unplugging any devices that you’re not currently using. That way, you can save some extra money here and there. You’ll also get into the practice of doing it, which enables it to become a helpful habit.
If there are devices that remain plugged in at the end of the day, do a quick check before going to bed, to see which ones could be removed.
- Be more self-sufficient with renewable energy
Renewable energy is a popular form of energy that many homeowners are looking to take advantage of nowadays. When you’re trying to be more self-sufficient with your energy, you should look into such renewable options like solar panels. Solar panels are a great way to save money on your home energy bills.
While they are an expense to begin with, over time you’re going to save more money, which will hopefully enable you to make money back on the energy you’ve saved from using at your national grid.
These are easy ways to save money on your bills, so make use of them for the sake of your finances this year.
