Santa’s Flip Cocktail Recipe

Santa’s Flip is a riff on the Porto Flip cocktail by the influential American bartender, Jerry Thomas. I’ve updated this smooth and cozy cocktail to include nutmeg, amaretto, and coffee liqueur. This is the perfect after-dinner Christmas cocktail for Santa as he leaves some gifts under the tree.

A Bit About Jerry Thomas

Jerry Thomas was an influential and, by all accounts, showy bartender working in the mid-19th century at multiple establishments across the U.S. In modern terms, he was a creative mixologist who passed down a record of budding modern cocktails in his book “The Bon-Vivant’s Companion.” One signature drink that he was known widely for was the Blue Blazer, an exciting performance of a drink including a pyrotechnic element of passing flaming alcohol in an arc between two mixing glasses.

Flip Cocktails

The Porto Flip is a classic cocktail belonging to the Flip family, which are cocktails that combine raw egg and heavy cream to create a creamy, frothy cocktail. Often considered holiday cocktails, they are essentially a simpler version of Egg Nog.

I write about the things I actually spend my time on: home projects that never go as planned, food worth traveling for, and figuring out which plants will survive my Northern California garden. All true. MK Library is where I share what I've learned the hard way, from real costs and real mistakes to the occasional thing that actually worked on the first try. Full Bio.
