How to Feel More Safe in Everyday Life

Whether we like it or not, we live in an unsafe world. True, different areas have different levels of safety, but it’s important to do everything we can to feel as safe as possible. This is especially true if you’re part of a vulnerable group or you’ve been a victim of crime before.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is take control of our own safety.

Road Safety

While a lot of people think about protecting themselves from crime, one of the most common causes for injuries and fatalities around the world is actually road traffic accidents. Whether you’re a pedestrian, a driver, or a cyclist, the road outside your house is probably the most dangerous part of your life.

Of course, traveling via car is a part of everyone’s lives. So how can we be safer on and around the road?

One of the most important things you can do is learn the rules of the road, as well as be aware that not everyone will follow them. It’s often said that the best way to drive is by assuming that you’re surrounded by idiots.

People will make mistakes. They won’t see everything, or they’ll pull out without looking and if you’re not able to react in time, you could be part of an accident. So it’s up to you to be as aware as possible, whether you’re a pedestrian or a driver.

Self Defence

If you do think about crime and violence, it’s wise to think about ways to protect ourselves.

It’s often said that the best self defence is to not be involved in a confrontation anyway. Even a trained martial artist can get hurt or killed in a fight, especially if they’re up against an armed opponent. If possible, get out of a dangerous situation.

If that’s not possible, consider getting a self defence tool like a pepper ball gun. This might deter an attacker and give you time to get away. When looking into equipment like this, make sure that you research what is and isn’t legal.

While it’s best not to get into a fight at all, sometimes it helps to get some self defence training. This can help you feel more confident and, more importantly, it can again get you some precious time to escape or get help.

Be Alert

One of the best ways to be safe is to be aware of your surroundings and any potential dangers, whether they’re on the road or with you on the street. Traveling as a group is often a good idea because, not only are you less vulnerable, you also have more eyes.

Some people find it’s best to wear headphones without listening to music. This deters people who just want to talk to you, while allowing you to still be more aware of anyone around you or following you.

Don’t walk around and just stare at the floor or your phone. Learn about safe and dangerous places to travel, especially alone. This could save your life or your belongings.

I write about the things I actually spend my time on: home projects that never go as planned, food worth traveling for, and figuring out which plants will survive my Northern California garden. When I'm not writing, I'm probably on a paddle board (I race competitively), exploring a new city for the food scene, or reminding people that I've raced both camels and ostriches and won both. All true. MK Library is where I share what I've learned the hard way, from real costs and real mistakes to the occasional thing that actually worked on the first try. Full Bio.
