The days tend to fly by quickly and you may now find yourself in your next phase of life as an aging adult. You may be retired and/or have grandkids to enjoy or take care of.
It becomes more important than ever to practice self-care and make your needs a priority as you get older. You want to give yourself the best chance possible of living a long and fruitful life. Your actions and daily habits will play a role in how you look and feel overall. Take the time to review four ways to keep yourself healthy as you get older.
- Proactively Manage Stress
Experiencing too much stress and anxiety can be debilitating and take a toll on your mental and physical health over time. You want to recognize when you may be feeling overwhelmed or off and address your thoughts, feelings, and emotions as quickly as possible. Keep yourself healthy as you age by proactively managing your stress. Try some different approaches and methods and see what works best for you. For example, it may be journaling regularly or reaching out and spending time with loved ones.
- Spend Time Outdoors & in Nature
Another way to keep yourself healthy as you get older is to spend time outdoors and in nature. Nature has a natural way of healing and making you feel calm. It will also give you a break away from being on your devices. If you’re someone who enjoys being by the water then you may want to schedule a weekly visit to a local beach. You can bring a towel and a book and read under an umbrella as you breathe in the fresh air. You may be someone who wears hearing aids and would be interested in reviewing some hearing aid tips for the beach. You’ll discover that it’s essential that you avoid getting them sandy and wet. It’s also important to have proper storage handy for your devices.Â
- Keep Active & Eat Right
If you want to be and stay well as you get older then keep active and eat right. The combination of exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet will have you looking and feeling great. You’ll also likely notice that you have more natural energy to carry you through the day. Talk to your doctor about what activities are best suited for your body, age, and skill level. You may want to consider joining a gym with other aging adults as well. You may find it enjoyable to order groceries and then cook healthy meals for yourself in the kitchen.Â
- Get on A Sleep Schedule
Getting enough and good quality sleep is vital for keeping healthy as you age. Lack of sleep can make you feel sluggish and moody and you may be less motivated to take care of yourself. If you feel tired during the day and want to nap, try to keep it to twenty to thirty minutes so it doesn’t interfere with your nighttime routine. Ideally, you should try to get on a sleep schedule so you’re going to bed and waking up around the same time each day.
