This occurs when there are more than 0.015 parts per million (ppm) of soluble lead in the water supply, according to EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule. Children can suffer weight loss, developmental delays, and irreversible brain damage if exposed to high levels of lead over long periods of time while adults may suffer kidney failure or anemia if exposed over a shorter period of time. Lead can also cause nervous system damage and high blood pressure for adults, and children may show hyperactivity and behavior problems.

When chlorine is added to water it combines with organic material (such as decomposing plants or animals) to form chemicals known as disinfection by-products. These chemicals include trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), bromate, chlorite, and chloroform. If you drink this water over long periods of time there is an increased risk of developing cancer because these chemicals are carcinogenic by some studies. In addition, THMs have been linked with reproductive effects such as spontaneous abortion.

However, excessive fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, which results in brown spots on the teeth and may increase the risk of bone fracture and joint pain. Fluoride is also known to weaken bones and teeth, which increases the risk of bone cancers, joint diseases, and tooth loss. Detecting fluoride is done by measuring the fluoride ion in water, which also means that other potential sources of fluoride must be addressed.

6. Chloramine in Tap Water

Chloramine is a disinfecting chemical that effectively kills disease-causing microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses but produces potentially harmful chemicals such as disinfection byproducts when used with chlorine or bromine. Chloramine is added to water to extend the shelf life of the water supply before distribution, but this process also increases the risk of developing cancer by drinking chlorinated water for a longer period of time. You can detect chloramine in tap water by the distinct chlorine-like odor and taste. Some water treatment systems may use an ultraviolet (UV) light process to additionally treat the water before distribution. UV light is a quick, effective method of treating water because it has no taste or smell and can prevent viruses and other disease-causing microorganisms from reproducing in the tank and tap.
