Nowadays, we are spending more time at home with our families. Some people who live independently have even opted to move back home to quarantine with their families. But there are only so many TV shows and movies on Netflix that we can binge-watch to keep us preoccupied and entertained. I don’t know about you, but I am definitely feeling the consequences of being in front of screens almost 24/7. Think about it, we are practically looking into screens in almost everything we do, the television, our laptops or desktop computers, tablets, and of course, our smartphones. If we don’t lessen our screen time, our eyes will suffer. But what else could we do for recreation while staying inside the house?
What Fun Games Can We Play At Home?
We’ve been so dependent on technology that we seem to have forgotten the fun times we used to have offline. There are countless games that you can enjoy with your friends and family without a screen. You can do party games, board games, and of course, card games. For classic card games, all you need is a simple deck of playing cards, for others, you can get special card games. Time to kick it back old-school and have a blast!
Fun Card Games To Play With Your Family
- Old Maid
You will be using a classic 52-card deck, remove one of the queens and shuffle the remaining 51 cards. Deal one card at a time for each player, repeat it all the way around until the deck runs out. Players don’t need to have an equal number of cards. Every player then discards all the pairs in their hands face down. If you have three of the same card, discard two of them and keep the third. After, the dealer then fans out their hand and lets the player on the left pick one at random, if the chosen card produces a pair with one of that player’s cards in their hand, then they must discard them, the play continues clockwise until all the cards have been paired but one queen. Whoever is left with the unpaired queen is the old maid.
This one is a famous game played by millions around the world. Uno is a fun and simple card game, you can even learn as you play. Basically, to win the game, you have to get rid of all your cards. Each player is dealt seven cards, facing down. Then the dealer places the rest of the deck in the center, this becomes the draw pile. The top card is drawn face up then placed beside the draw pile, this becomes the discard pile. The player to the left of the dealer must then discard one card from their hand to match the top card on the discard pile. They can either match the color or number of the card. Then it repeats with the next player on the left, it goes clockwise. If a player cannot match any card, they must pick a card up from the draw pile and add it to their hand. Special cards are pretty self-explanatory. Remember to shout out “Uno!” if you have one card left. Once a player loses all their cards, they win!
- Exploding Kittens
This award-winning game is the most-backed product in Kickstarter history. It’s pretty much a cat version of Russian roulette. To set up the game, take all the exploding kittens and diffuse cards out of the deck and set them aside. Shuffle the deck. Deal seven cards to each player. Then give each one a diffuse card. Shuffle the remaining diffuse cards into the deck along with the needed amount of exploding kittens, which is one less than the number of players. Each player takes turns, each player can play however many cards from their hand on their turn, including zero, then after, they must pick up a card from the draw pile. Once a player picks up an exploding kitten, they can diffuse it with their diffuse card. If they do not have a diffuse card, they are out of the game. The last player who doesn’t explode wins!
Not only are these games extremely entertaining they also foster better bonding with friends and family. When you start playing these games, you’re bound to have so much fun, time will fly, and you will even forget to look at your phones!
